Mary Foster Conklin & George Evans at Pangea

    7:00 pm-8:00 pm
    Nov/Fri/2018
    Pangea
178 2nd Ave, New York, NY 10003, USA

“Mary Foster Conklin & George Evans: Dark Days/Vivid Nights – An Evening of Cabaret Noir”

Mary Foster Conklin and George Evans are old friends with a shared passion for jazz, radio and the Great American Songbook.  Their last musical venture in New York won them a MAC nomination for Best Duo and its been too long since they sang together, as George has been traveling the world singing on luxury liners for the upper crust.  Now that he is finally stateside, the time has come for a reunion concert and Pangea is the perfect place for an evening of blues, swing and noir cabaret.  Deanna Witkowski joins them on piano with Daniel Foose on bass.

Vocalist and radio host Mary Foster Conklin is an old school song hound and a master storyteller. Her smoky voice with a tart twist of lemon has been described as both recognizably traditional yet unmistakably contemporary, as she puts her personal stamp on a repertoire that spans over nine decades.  A multi-Bistro and MAC award winner, Mary has performed throughout the United States and Canada.  She currently hosts a weekly radio show on WFDU-FM HD2 called A Broad Spectrum which highlights women composers and lyricists and is a proud member of Ana Choired Taste  a 12 member jazz chorus devoted to the music of Frank Zappa, among others.  Her fourth CD, Photographs, a memory piece of standards and contemporary tunes, was released in 2016 to critical acclaim.  She is thrilled to rejoin George Evans on the stage.  www.maryfosterconklin.com

“Scratch her witty tough-girl-from-Jersey patter and you’ll find a sensitive artist (but not frail) with a wide-ranging boldly colored voice and an open ear for off-beat material.” The Washington Post

“Her distinctive rich and dusky sound is completely captivating, conjuring up images of a film noir femme fatale.” Jersey Jazz

“A master of conveying world-weary bitter sweet emotions, tempered with an odd unlikely sense of optimism.”
    Jazz Music Archives

George Evans’ career as a Canadian jazz singer has taken him across the country and around the world, playing festivals and clubs from Montréal to Vancouver. He is known to Canadian radio and television audiences through his 8 albums in rotation on national jazz radio, and as a broadcaster with 10 years presenting popular standards on-the-air. Award nominations and print reviews in the national press gave him considerable profile for an indie artist, but in 2009 George left it behind, playing with a trio 7 days a week for 3 different cruise lines, and traveling to 6 continents over a period of 7 years. George’s roots in New York cabaret deeply influence his performance style, and he counts his past and present collaboration with Mary Foster Conklin among the most provocative and rewarding of his career. www.georgeevans.ca

“A smooth operator, a crooner, and a classical jazz vocalist who mixes it up with a soulful swinging sophisticated style.” KJA Jazz Advocate

“This handsome singer conveys a warm presence and easy charm that make you like him almost immediately.” Songbirds

“Evans sits in a comfortable niche between jazz and cabaret, his vocal technique carved to bring out the best of both.” All About Jazz
