The Birdland Theater is Proud to Present: Mark Nadler & Marta Sanders!

    About this Event

    Mark Nadler & Marta Sanders

    June 4 at 7pm

    Birdland Theater

Join award-winning, internationally acclaimed cabaret power houses Mark Nadler and Marta Sanders for an evening of entertainment with a capital E! He plays the piano, sings and tap dances. She blows the roof off the place with her powerful voice. And both of them take the audience an emotional ride from belly laughs to tears to cheers!

Mark Nadler is the recipient of eight awards from the Manhattan Association of Cabarets, three Backstage Bistros, two New York Nightlife Awards and two Broadway World Awards. Additionally, he was awarded two Bay Area Outer Critics’ Circle Awards. He has been a soloist with major orchestras, playing everywhere from Carnegie Hall to Philadelphia’s 14,000 seat amphitheater at The Mann Center. His most recent off-Broadway show, “I’m a Stranger Here Myself”, was honored with a New York Nightlife Award, a Drama Desk nomination and a nomination for Australia’s highest performing arts honor, the Helpmann Award.

Texan-born Marta Sanders hails from a family of singers and performers. During her peripatetic childhood, she attended high school and began taking classical voice lessons in Bogota, Colombia. After graduation, she expanded her voice studies beyond the realm of opera to the emotionally charged Spanish music around her. Upon moving to New York City, Sanders attended the American Musical and Dramatic Academy to study voice with the respected Paul Gavert. Early performances quickly followed graduation. She earned her Actor’s Equity card in a production of Man of La Mancha and sang with singing groups, Jerry Morton & Somebody’s Kids and The Individuals. Sanders was invited to perform a solo show in Santo Domingo at the Manaloa Nightclub, which began a love of nightclub engagements. When she returned to New York, Sanders performed in cabaret rooms that included Reno Sweeney’s, Les Mouches, Ted Hook’s Backstage, and The Ballroom, singing an original blend of powerful Spanish ballads, hit show tunes and the work of other bright young artists. She performed in beloved cabaret showrooms that include Rainbow & Stars, Upstairs at Greene Street, Maxim’s, The Copacabana, Chateau Madrid, Eighty-Eights, Freddy’s, Sweetwater’s, Danny’s Skylight Room and Arci’s Place. More recently she has performed in the Metropolitan Room, The Triad, and The Laurie Beechman Theatre. Marta has been honored to sing at Rose Hall, Zankel Hall, and Weill Recital Hall. Marta, a past winner of both the MAC and BISTRO Awards for “Outstanding Female Vocalist.” In 2018 she won the BISTRO Award for “Consummate Cabaret Artistry.”

Marissa Mulder: I’ll Follow The Sun
The John Lennon and Paul McCartney Songbooks

“Marissa Mulder is a natural; a rarity among cabaret singers. You never hear her struggling to tell a story or to make a point or to show off the range and beauty of her sparkling perfectly pitched soprano. Whatever she sings just seems to spill out of her without forethought or calculation.  Always, the emotional truth of whatever she sings is right there in front of you. Even when she’s telling someone else’s story, she makes it hers.” – Stephen Holden, The New York Times

Join award winning songstress Marissa Mulder as she dives into the songbook of two of the most prolific and beloved songwriting duos of all time, John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Backed by her trio Jon Weberon piano, Ritt Henn on bass, and Mike Rosengarten on guitar you will hear each song as you never have before. Ms. Mulder’s cabaret show Tom…In his words, the songs of Tom Waits was called “Far and away the season’s best cabaret show, everything the genre can be and almost never is” by the New York Times, and this new show will be no exception. You will hear old favorites and some lesser known gems, each song more relevant today than perhaps ever before.

What I know how to do is to tell stories through theater. And what I realized is that, often times, stories of abuse and assault are extraordinarily difficult to tell. With skilled actors, singers, and musicians, events that are often too hard to speak of can be expressed and told in a creative way. We have put together quite a remarkable show that is not only inspiring, but also important. Along with David Friedman’s music which so perfectly captures the spirit and emotion of the show’s themes, We Can Be Kind is a must see!”
“Daniel Levine has brilliantly created an informative, emotional and ultimately inspiring evening, weaving my songs together with stories of triumph and overcoming. I couldn’t be more humbled and proud to have my songs used in this way, for this worthiest of causes.”

Ann Hampton Callaway Jazz Goes To The Movies

    7:00 pm-8:00 pm
    Jun/Tue/2019
    254 W 54th St, New York, NY 10019

Tony-nominated, Platinum Award-winning singer-songwriter Ann Hampton Callaway‘s Jazz Goes To The Movies, her requiste new album, which debuted as #12 on the Billboard Jazz Chart, comes to Feinstein’s/54 Below this June in a BRAND NEW SHOW!

There are precious few vocalists whose artistry flourishes in both the worlds of popular song and jazz, as each world has its own special demands and challenges. Like Sarah Vaughan, Diane Reeves, and Mel Torme, Tony-nominated, Theater World Award-winning singer-songwriter Ann Hampton Callaway manages this feat seemingly effortless, delivering vocal tour-de-forces marked by refined beauty, subtlety, grandeur, profound musicality and passion. Having done critically-acclaimed tributes to the likes of Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald, written hits for Barbra Streisand, released albums of original songs, and through her performances and recordings helped keep the Great American Songbook alive and vital, Ann decided for her fourteenth album to fulfill a long-time dream, a recording of great songs from classic motion pictures. Recently Shanachie Entertainment released Ann Hampton Callaway’s Jazz Goes To The Movies a magnificent collection of sublime interpretations of great songs featured in beloved Hollywood films.

The companion show to the CD, explores the fascinating ways jazz and film have come together to tell stories. The playlist includes “Taking a Chance on Love” from Vernon Duke’s Cabin in the Sky, “Let’s Face the Music and Dance” from Irving Berlin’s Follow the Fleet, “This Time the Dream’s on Me” from Harold Arlen’s Blues in the Night, and “As Time Goes By,” the Herman Hupfeld classic from Casablanca. Callaway also performs jazz songs she has recorded for films, including “Come Rain or Come Shine” from The Good Shepherd, starring Robert DeNiro, “The Nearness of You” from Last Holiday starring Queen Latifah, and “Pourquoi,” a song she wrote for the new film Blind, starring Alec Baldwin and Demi Moore.
